శరసంధాన బల క్షమాది వివిధైశ్వర్యంబులన్ గల్గి
దుర్భర షండత్వ బిలప్రవేశ చలన బ్రహ్మాఘ్నతన్ మానినన్
నర సింహ క్షితి మండలేశ్వరుల నెన్నన్ వచ్చు నీ సాటిగా !
నరసింహ క్షితిమండలేశ్వరుని కృష్ణా ! రాజ కంఠీరవా !
Having the virtues of archery (శరసంధాన), strength (బల), patience (క్షమ) , and prosperity (వివిధైశ్వర్యము);
Arjuna (నర), Lion (సింహ), earth (క్షితి), Indra (మండలేశ్వర) could be comparable to you;
if they did not have the flaws of being a eunuch at the time of trouble/getting afraid under pressure (దుర్భర షండత్వ ), bowing its head to enter cave (బిలప్రవేశ), shivering/quaking (చలన) killing of brahmin (బ్రహ్మాఘ్న).
[Oh!] Lion among Kings (రాజ కంఠీరవా), Krishna [the son] of King (క్షితిమండలేశ్వర) Salva Narasimha (నరసింహ).
This beautiful poem was composed by Allasani Peddanna praising Krishnadevaraya. However, Tenali Ramakrishna commented that "On one hand you talk about the flaw of a lion bowing its head while going into its cave, and then say that Krishnadevaraya is a lion among kings.".
When asked by Allasani Peddana to recite a poem, Ramakrishna recited this poem in extempore fashion.
కలనన్ తావక ఖడ్గ ఖండిత రిపుక్ష్మా భక్త
మార్తాండ మండలభేదంబొనరించి ఎగునెడ
తన్ మధ్యంబునన్ హార కుండల కేయూర కిరీట భూషితుని
శ్రీ నారాయణున్ గాంచి లోగలరంబారుతునేగే నీవయను శంకన్ కృష్ణరాయాధిపా
Oh! Lord Krishnaraya, in a war, when one of [your] enemies got beheaded by your sword, and he was proceeding towards heaven (leaving the domain of the sun), en route, he saw Sri Narayana bedecked in garland, ear ornaments, armlets and crown, and got scared, because he thought that he is seeing you.

Most of the poem is quite straight. However, I am uncertain about the translation of some words as the english transliteration is coming out to be ambiguous.
DeletePallavi : Oh Saraswati (Kalaimagal), bestow your ocean of compassion.
Anupallavi : [You are] The one Lakshmi (Alaimagal), Sages (?) , and Parvati (Maraimagal) worship. You are the eternal gem (?), remove the darkness in me.
Charanam : (Totally eyeballing) The treasure who bestowed poetry, prosody, dance and music (+ something more) on earth; the sun and the moon bow to you.

ReplyDeleteIn the poem recited by Tenali Ramakrishna, I think, it was Lord Shiva (and not Indra as mentioned by you) who beheaded Brahma for lying. I think initially Lord Brahma was having five heads and after Lord Shiva severing one of the heads which uttered a lie, Lord Brahma became "Chaturanana", one having four heads. Please check and make correction, if you agree with me. Thanks for nice translation.
ReplyDelete"Brahmaagna" is not killing of Brahma. It is killing of Brahmin. Indra is tainted with the killing of Sage Dadichi, whose backbone was used to fashion the Vajrayudha. Hence the "Brahmaagna".
