Background:
This is a beautiful song from the Telugu movie "Sirivennela", which was released in 1987. This movie popularised lyricist Seetharama Sastry as Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry.

The superficial concept of the song is that 'asking for something from Lord Siva is futile'.

Translation:
[He is] the first alms-seeker, what can I seek from him.
[He is] capable of giving only ash, what can I ask him.
What can I seek, what can I ask him.

From the one who painted the sweet singing cuckoo black, what can I seek.
From the one who decorated the clouds, which roar roughly (thunder), with the bright lightning, what can I ask.

From the one who gave a short life of three days to the tender flowers which give sweet nectar, what can I seek.
From the one who granted eternal life to rocks, what can I ask.

From the one who burnt Manmadha, who paved way for his own marriage with the daugher of the hills (Giribala-Parvathy), to ashes, what can I seek
From the one who set his grace [and granted the wishes] of arrogant stalwarts who were bent on harassing the three worlds, what can I ask

The one seeking flattery, the  raging Shankara
The three-eyed one, the quick-tempered, crazy Shankara
