The song is an adaptation of ‘Darikavadham’ – a song used in a traditional Kerala ritual called Kalam Paattu (literally - song when you dance over a ‘kalam’, i.e rangoli of the goddess) or Mudiyettu. It is an uniquely Kerala legend and it is widely propagated among tribals as well as non-tribals.
The story is about the death of the demon King Darika by Goddess Bhagavati/Bhadrakali. Darika, though severe penance, gained various boons. The most important boon was from Brahma who granted him immunity from death at the hands of any man, but with a curse that a woman would kill him. The demon Darika wrecks havoc all over earth and heaven. Acting on Lord Brahma's advise, Lord Siva created Bhadrakali from his fiery third eye. All the Devas donated their special weapons, and Bhadrakali succeeded in destroying the demons after fierce battles.
The other viral Malayalm song “Pallivalu Bhadravatakam” is also based on this same legend.
This particular song speaks of the time when Bhadrakali
initially tries to lure the demon out of his cave by taunting him.
