Soundarya Lahari - Sloka 24 - Defence against Dark Arts

Sanskrit Text :

जगत्सूते धाता हरिरवति रुद्रः क्षपयते
तिरस्कुर्वन्नेतत् स्वमपि वपुरीशस्तिरयति
सदापूर्वः सर्वं तदिदं अनुगृह्णाति च शिवः
तवाज्ञां आलम्ब्य क्षणचालितयोः  भ्रूतलिकयोः

Transliteration :

jagat sUtE dhAtA hariravati rudrah kshapayatE
tiraskurvan Etat svam api vapurIshastirayati
sadApUrvah sarvam tad idam anugruhNati ca shivah
tavAjnAm Alambya kshaNacalitayOh bhrUlatikayOh

Meaning :

[O Mother,] Brahma creates all the different worlds, Vishnu protects those worlds and Rudra causes the end of the worlds; Eeshwara merges all the three into itself  and then disappears itself. Shiva, who has the word 'Sada' in the fore-part of his name, recreates all the four (i.e., the elements of Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and Eeshwara) with your orders conveyed by a momentary move of your creeper-like eyebrows.

Pooja Vidhi and Proposed Result

If one chants this verse 1000 times each day for 20 days, offering honey, black dal vada and til rice as prasadam, it is said that one would be defended against fear from all ghosts, ghouls and ill-effects of black magic.

Tamil Interpretation

தேவி அனுக்ரஹ ஆக்ஞையாலே
த்ரிபுவனமும் சிருஷ்டி செய்கிறார் சதுர்முகன்

முவ்வுலகங்கள் முகுந்தன் ரக்ஷணை செய்ய
பூவை உமை பாகன் புவனம் சம்ஹாரம் செய்ய

அறியாஸனத்தில் அமர்ந்து அழகுபுருவம்கண்டு
அரிதாம் நின்னாஞ்ஞை  கொண்டு அகிலமுழுதும் உண்டு
அரிகரன் அயன் ஈசன் ஐக்யமாய் சதாசிவ
சொரூபத்தில்லயமாகி தானும் மறைந்திடவே

ப்ருவசனமரிந்து புகழ் நாத சதாசிவம்
தருணம் சிருஷ்டித்திடும் திருமூர்த்தி ஈசனையும்
குறிப்பிக்க புருவத்தை கொடிப்போலே அசைந்திட
அறிந்தே விசால லோகம் நிக்ரானுக்ரகாம் செய்ய
