Introduction :
Sundara Kandam (which means 'beautiful chapter') is the fifth chapter of the Ramayana. It describes the adventures of Hanuman. This chapter is the only one in Ramayana wherein it is Hanuman, and not Rama, who is presented as the central character. The reason for the name सुंदरकाण्ड (Sundarakanda) rather than हनुमात्काण्ड (Hanumatkanda) or आंजनेयकाण्ड (Anjaneyakanda) is that the 'Sundara' was the name with which Anjani, the mother of Hanuman used to call him.

சுந்தரகானமெனும் பெயர் சொல்லுவார்
இதை சுகம் தரும் சொர்க்கம் என்று கருத்தினில் கொள்ளுவார்
கண்டேன் சீதையை என்று காகுச்தனிடம் சொல்ல
கருணைமிகு இராமபத்திரன் ஆஞ்சநேயன் பெருமை இது
அஞ்சனை தனயன் அலைகடல் தாண்டவே ஆயத்தமாகி நின்றான்
ராமபாணம் போல் ராக்ஷச மனை நோக்கி
ராஜகம்பீரத்தொடு ராமதூதன் சென்றான்
அங்கதனும் ஜாம்பவானும் அனைத்து வானரர்களும்
அன்புடன் விடை குடுத்து வழி அனிப்பினரே
வானவர்கள் தானவர்கள் வருணாதி தேவர்கள்

ஆஞ்சனேயன் கை கூப்பி கண்டேன் சீதையை என்றான்
வைதேஹி வாய்மொழியை அடையாளமாகக் கூறி
சொல்லின் செல்வன் ஆஞ்சனேயன் சூடாமணியை குடுத்தான்
மனம்கனிந்து மாருதியை மார்போடு அணைத்த ராமன்
மைதிலியை சிறைவீட்க்க மறுகணம் சித்தம் ஆனான்
ஆழ்கடலில் அற்புதமாய் அணைகட்டி படைகள் சூழ
ஹனுமனும் இலக்குவனும் உடன்வர புறப்பட்டார்
அழித்திட்டான் ராவணனை ஒழித்திட்டான் அதர்மத்தை
அன்னை சீதாதேவியை சிறைமீட்டு அடைந்திட்டான்
அயோத்தி சென்று ராமன் அகிலம் புகழ ஆட்சி செய்தான்
அவனை சரணடைன்தொர்க்கு அவன் அருள் என்றும் உண்டு
எங்கெங்கு ரகுநாத கீர்த்தனம் உண்டோ, அங்கங்கு சிரம் மேல் கரம் குவித்து, மனமுருகி நீர் சொறிந்து, ஆனந்தத்தில் முழுகி கேட்கும் பரிபூர்ண பக்தனே, ஸ்ரீ ஆஞ்சநேயனே, உன்னை பணிகின்றோம், உன்னை பன்முறை பணிகின்றோம்
They call it 'Sundarakandam', the knowledgable say that it would provide heavenly happiness. It reports the greatness of Anjaneya, who said "I did see Seetha", to the benevolent Rama.
The son of Anjana, readied himself to cross the great ocean, and then, like a arrow out of Rama's bow and with royal majesty, Rama's messenger proceeded towards the abode of Rakshasas.
Angada, Jambavan and all the Vanaras gave a loving farewell. Those living the worlds above and below and devas like Varuna, stood along his way and showered him with flowers.
He (Maruti) satisfied the hospitality of golden mountain Mainaka, which had sprung from the ocean to provide a place to rest for Hanuman. He then conquered the demonesses Surasa (who had the power to assume any form) and Simhika (who had the power to get anybody in her grip by merely grasping their shadow). He valiantly crossed the ocean and reached Lanka.
Upon being insulted by Lankini, the guardian of Lanka, he punished her (with his left hand), and incited fear in her mind. On searching for Sita in the beautiful Lanka, he found her in the Ashoka garden.
He was pained to see mother Seetha, thinking of Rama, sitting under an Ashoka tree. He approached her (who was harassed by Ravana and the Rakshasis) to relieve her of her sorrows.
He gave her Rama's signet ring and narrated Rama's tale to her (to win her trust) and then obtained the Choodamani (jewel to be kept in the hair-bun) from Seetha. Furious on the demons who had caused the tears in the eyes of mother (Seetha), he then proceeded to destroyed the Ashoka garden along with all who were present.
However, he let himself be captured by the Brahmastra and then narrated the story of Rama. The irritated King of Lanka ordered that Hanuman's tail be set on fire. But, the plan backfired and Anjaneya set the whole city of Lanka on fire.
Hanuman, on crushing the pride of the demons, got permission from Seetha and returned through the aerial route, happy that he had seen Seetha.
He told "I did see Seetha".to Rama, who was in a sea of unending sadness. He then proceeded to repeat his conversation with Seetha to Rama and presented the Choodamani given by Seetha.
Rama joyously hugged Anjaneya, and with renewed vigour, restarted his efforts to release Seetha from her prison. On building a wondrous bridge across the deep ocean, Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana, Hanuman and the Vanara army proceeded towards Lanka.
Rama then killed Ravana and removed injustice. He then freed mother Seetha. They proceeded to Ayodhya and Rama ruled his kingdom in a manner that was praised by the entire world. Those who sought his refuge were always assured of his help.
O! the complete and true devotee of Rama, who can always be seen with his hands folded on top of his head, with tears of happiness streaming forth his eyes, lost in a state of bliss; wherever praise of Raghunatha are sung, we salute you, we salute you a million times.
