Benazir Killed : Lube Oil on Downward Spiral

"Benazir Bhutto Assassinated", my father said, as I just stepped into my home on 27th evening. I was shocked by the news, though, I have to admit that I couldn't care less for her life or well-being. But, what did occur to me was that this assassination would act like lubricant on the 'downward spiral' that Pakistani politics is riding on.

  • Here is a country that had not even decided a way by which to run itself. Sometimes being a parlimentary form of goverment, sometimes presidential and semi-presidential on some occasions.
  • Here is a country which had not seen a decent full term of an elected goverment. (Benazir, as an example, was removed from office not once, but twice)
  • Here is a seemingly democratic country, where, the candidates for premier posts are feudal lords. (I recently came to know that Benazir Bhutto owns over 16000 acres of land. A massive chunk considering that she is not a 'farmer' and the land is in a south-asian country, something which by default is overcrowded)
  • Here is a country in which 4 of the 12 Presidents till date, have been military personnnel who were not elected by a Senate.
  • Here is a country in which none of the Prime Ministers who were duly elected hac completed a five year term.

This country was hell-bent on destroying itself. But, with the recent international interest in Pakistani politics, there was hope, albeit, very very far fetched one. The elections that were to be held in January could have provided some stability and could have acted as a pressure release valve to the tense political situation in Pakistan.

With the assassination, the hope is gone and the situation has turned worse. It acted like a good quality lubricant on the downward spiral.
